There’s a chance to honour the heroes of D Day at a special concert in St Mary’s Priory Church, Abergavenny, on Saturday, June 7—and to help, in a practical way, those who are still suffering from having served their country down the years.
D-Day 70 will feature the senior and junior sections of Abergavenny Borough Band, soloists from St Mary’s Priory Church , and the Llanfoist Fawr Primary School Choir, with music ranging from marches to a medley of Vera Lynn songs and a performance of The Quartermaster’s Stores by the school choir.
The evening will also feature a world premiere of Lest We Forget by composer Dave Collins, inspired by the selfless sacrifice of those involving in the landings, to be played by Abergavenny Borough Band, with off-stage buglers and spoken text by writer Lewis Wilkinson.
As part of the long-term building of reconciliations and friendship between the twinned towns of Abergavenny and of Oestringen in Germany, the performance of Lest We Forget will be directed by guest conductor Harald Hepner, director of the Stadtorchester and Musikschule in Ravensburg.
Dave Collins commented: “Lewis and I are very excited for this work to be premiered by Abergavenny Band as part of this incredibly moving concert. The work reflects our admiration of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice protecting this country, but also acknowledges the violence, horror and destruction caused by war.”
The Band’s MD, Craig Roberts, added: “We’ve held a close connection with Germany for many years. Abergavenny is twinned with the town of Oestringen and the band itself will be heading to Nürtingen and Baden-Württemberg on tour this summer. We thought it the perfect occasion to invite Herr Hepner to Wales to conduct this concert and tribute to all fallen servicemen and women.”
Tickets for the event on Saturday, June 7, at 7pm, are £10, with concessions at £8. Tickets for children aged 12 years and under are free, as are those for current and ex-service personnel. They are available from the Tithe Barn, by ringing 01873 856624 or on the door.
Proceeds from the event will be shared between the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, Abergavenny Borough Band and St Mary’s Priory Church. There will be a retiring collection for those charities.
